Slim-Fast After Week 5

Published by Kara under Food, Health, Personal, Plugs

Today, after I managed to convince myself it couldn’t be that cold outside of my down comforter (side note: it was colder than that), I weighed myself first thing and then went skipping into the kitchen where Michael was preparing our lunch and snacks for the work day. I have lost exactly 10 pounds from [...]

Slim-Fast, After Week Four

Published by Kara under Health, Personal

I moved off my plateau on Saturday, losing two more pounds that were still off this morning.  This could be water weight, it could be a lot of things.  But after two full weeks at the same weight, I take it as a good sign.
I went out to eat on Saturday and on Sunday.  Saturday [...]

Drugs and Depression

Published by Kara under Health, Rants

From Dear Abby:
Last February, I printed a letter from Marc Galanter, M.D., the director of alcoholism and drug abuse at New York University Medical Center. In it he said: “(W)e know that illicit drug use changes the developing brain. Many young people smoke pot before their brain development is settled, and their chronic use of [...]

Slim Fast, After Week 3

Published by Kara under Health, Personal

I don’t want to talk about it.
I am the same stupid weight. I have been the same stupid weight for two weeks now even though I haven’t cheated with the food. And I would be working out if it wasn’t for my allergic asthma right now. And maybe I’m sleeping too much, but my Zyrtec [...]

Slim-Fast, Week 2

Published by Kara under Health, Personal

Not Slimming so Fast.
Perhaps my expectations are unreasonable. Today I weigh the very same as I weighed last week, Michael has lost 1.5 pounds since last week.
I haven’t even cheated on my diet this week. I haven’t been outside or walking as much because my tree pollen allergies have kicked into full asthmatic, eczema-tastic [...]

Obesity and Beauty

Published by Kara under Health, Personal

I’ve been thinking a lot about being fat. This isn’t unusual behavior.  I’ve been bigger than 99% of my peers since I was, oh, born. For the majority of my life, I was remarkably unattractive to most guys, excepting the ones who thought I was easy - either because of my looks or the company [...]

Slim-fast, After Week One

Published by Kara under Health, Personal

Michael and I have lost 4 pounds each since our weigh-in last week, which means that the plan we’ve been following has worked. That doesn’t mean we don’t complain about it, though. These are my thoughts upon finishing week one of our diet.

As hungry as I was at the beginning of the week, [...]

The Most Disturbing Search Query Ever

Published by Michael under Health, Sad

So, trawling through the server access logs, I find that one of our visitors this month happened upon our blog by typing the following into MSN Search:

how to have a self abortion at 4 months

This visitor’s IP address places them in a fairly small town in the middle of Nebraska, 90 miles from the nearest [...]

Diets and Losers

Published by Kara under Health

I have been of the belief for a while now that when attempting to overcome a personal obstacle, the worst people to talk to about it are people who have already overcome that same obstacle.  Or what they say is the same obstacle, never mind that no two people are the same, therefore any obstacle [...]

Broccoli Rabe vs Chinese Broccoli

Published by Kara under Health, Rants

I like Broccoli, it’s my favorite vegetable.  I’ve been sick the past two days and saw this recipe on veganyumyum.  It looked good until I read about Chinese Broccoli which looks very similar to Rapini or broccoli rabe.
Michael and I experimented with rapini this summer.  Check out this rehosted picture from wikipedia:

Rapini is used traditionally [...]
