There Goes the Neigborhood…

Published by Kara under Food, Personal

I took some pictures yesterday of what has been sitting in our parking lot since Tuesday or Wednesday morning. The remains of an engine fire. Let me show you… I think it’s pretty neat.

Before it seems like I’m taking joy in someone’s misery, let me assure you, I’m not. These have been sitting outside, [...]

Dinners with CSA Week 3

Published by Kara under Food, Personal

We’ve been focusing on using up a lot of the leftover produce we had from last week and before. Last night, we started into the spring mix from this week and there is some sort of purple-y green that hits like wasabi.  Mustard greens, maybe? That stuff does not play. Michael made the salad from [...]

Calvert Farm CSA - Week 3

The box this week brought us:

Very ripe Strawberries, two pints
Spearmint, one bag.
Spring mix, one bag
Bib? Lettuce, one head
Spring Onions, one enormous bunch
White Potatoes, 6
Collard Greens (by our estimates), one bunch

Michael has made me spearmint tea, and I think I’ll go drink it now, while I try to think of some moderately healthy way we can [...]

Dinner One with CSA for Week 2

Published by Kara under Food, Health, Kitties!, Personal

Last night, Michael made us a tasty pasta with arugula, mushrooms, spring onions, garlic, fresh oregano and crushed red pepper flakes. He sautéed all the ingredients minus the pasta with olive oil in a cast-iron pan, taking care not to sauté the arugula or oregano for too long. The arugula was only wilted, [...]

Red Leaf Lettuce, one head.
Button Mushrooms, one paper bag.
Red Potatoes, three.
Baby Arugula, one bag.
Mint, one bag.
Beets (including [...]

Things to do - Binghamton and Ithaca, NY

Published by Kara under Food, Outings, Personal

Michael and I left on Friday for Binghamton, NY - where we would be staying with my family and then driving the hour to Ithaca to watch my youngest sister graduate from Cornell University.
Since Michael and I drove separately, we had our own vehicle and made our own plans for sight-seeing. On the agenda: Cornell [...]

Dinner with CSA Produce, Week 1

Published by Michael under Food

Kara is of the opinion that if we’re going to talk about food as much as we do on this blog, we should post more about the humdrum task of making food for dinner every night. So here’s what I did with the produce we got from our CSA this evening (see Kara’s post below [...]

Shlagel Farms and Home Canning

Published by Kara under Food, Outings

Today, Michael and I went to pick strawberries. Southern Maryland is picking now - most places in western Maryland will be opening for picking next weekend or the weekend after. Shlagel Farms is open now, and is very accessible in Waldorf, MD. You’ll drive by their calves and cows, heading down towards the [...]
