Cool things I saw at the National Zoo:
- Red Pandas. These little guys look like rounded foxes. One of them climbed on a branch that was right near Michael and me, then it sat and ate bamboo about 10 feet away from us.
- Asian sea otters. We watched two females battle for a good five minutes right in front of us. They would spin each other around, gnash at each others’ faces, etc.
- Giant Pacific Octopus being fed. The octopus is always my favorite at the zoo, but she was particularly showy that day.
- Two frogs having sex. Which is less interesting than you would think, but still kind of cool.
I missed the bird house because we headed to the movies to see the oscar-nominated live-action shorts. No magpies for me. But the shorts were good, particularly the Danish one (Grisen), the German film On the Line and also the Irish film New Boy. There was the requisite German Holocaust short, and a stupid French film that made a better poem than a movie. Maybe someone really likes that sort of thing but it just felt shallow to me. There were, however, some fantastic French breasts bared. And I mean fantastic.
I should mention: the zoo is great earlier in the morning. Not a bunch of people pushing strollers or yelling at their kids. Of course, we went during the week when most people are at work, so that explains smaller numbers too.
