Songs I like Right Now

Published by Kara at 10:48 am under Music

I have this habit, it’s really a bad habit. I get addicted to songs. I mean, I binge on songs and then some day, months after I’m done with binging, I get to the point where I can’t even listen to that song any more. My stomach starts turning because I overdid it for the first few months. So I try to keep everything in check, but sometimes things just stick in my head and I can’t alleviate it.

  • “Oh my love,” John Lennon, from Imagine

I can pinpoint a couple things I really like about this song. It is one of the shortest (may be the shortest) song on Imagine. John Lennon really never learned how to end songs well, as evidenced by this album. The end of “jealous guy” is awful, in my opinion (really sort of lighthearted and it makes the whole apology of the song seem like a fallacy). But this song ends perfectly.

And it begins perfectly. The first time I heard it, I got the piano in the verses stuck in my head. But the song begins with guitar, and then the piano comes in. The way the two instruments interact and feed off each is a metaphor to me of a relationship. I like the beginning more each time I listen to the song.

The lyrics are typical John. They’re not amazing, but they’re expressive in their simplicity and their images. The vocal melody is a little bit different, I can’t put my finger on it. It stays with you. I can’t escape this song.

A bad video with a lot of John sucking Yoko’s face.

  • “Confusion,” The Zutons from Who Killed the Zutons

The Zutons have a few good songs. This is not one of them. I mean, the vocal melody and the easy guitar part are pretty, that’s all. The vocals in the chorus are off-key, still, I love it. The stupid horn starts bleeting in the second verse, and still, I love it. The video is kinda cute, but really boring. Still, I love this dang song.

A video with cockroaches rocking out.

That’s it for now. I’ve also been listening pretty incessantly to Grant Lee Buffalo, Mighty Joe Moon. Great album. He is fun to sing, although I can’t quite hit the lower parts of his range.

Grant Lee Buffalo, Mighty Joe Moon: yay! I listen to that a lot (still). I like to sing with it while folding laundry.
