Slim-Fast After Week 5

Today, after I managed to convince myself it couldn’t be that cold outside of my down comforter (side note: it was colder than that), I weighed myself first thing and then went skipping into the kitchen where Michael was preparing our lunch and snacks for the work day. I have lost exactly 10 pounds from my starting weight with slim-fast on April 6. Michael has lost 9.5 pounds.

Maybe some people wouldn’t get as excited as me about that loss. But at the beginning of April, I made a personal goal of losing ten pounds by June first. Ten pounds in two months isn’t much, but for me it was a reasonable goal, one I was almost certain to reach and reaching that goal was intended to keep me motivated about the process of losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. To be less than two weeks into May and have lost that much weight feels pretty good.

I haven’t set any “rewards” for that goal, because last weekend I bought a new dress and got some terrific perfume. But I have set a reward for continued weight-loss throughout June of a new bathing suit for a trip to the Outer Banks with Michael’s family. I’ve finally gotten out of the “I’ve been eating well, let me reward myself with an enormous danish” mind-set, which makes me feel good. Food isn’t a reward and that takes away the power that food has held over me.

Michael and I have been discussing this weekend how much we like the slim-fast plan. It has managed to fit pretty easily into our lives, even if it is expensive (but we are eating out much less frequently). I can’t speak for him, but I’m more conscious of when I’m hungry and when I’m full. I’m satisfied with smaller servings of things, I’m not craving the sugar that has always been my downfall. I’m using the postal scale to mete out snacks to myself into bowls when we don’t have pre-bagged snacks around. In other words – I’m eating reasonably.

We went to T.G.I. Friday’s on Saturday, split a green bean fry appetizer and each had one of their smaller portion size dishes. We were the only people in the entire restaurant I saw eating one of those smaller portions, despite the advertising surrounding them (and the fact that they are pretty darn tasty, although, not vegetarian). I hope more places follow suit with smaller portion sizes. A few hundred more calories than usual at one meal won’t kill you the same way that a thousand more calories than usual will.
All in all, I’m pleased with my weight-loss so far, and I can see slim-fast fitting into my life on a permanent basis. Not just as a weight-loss tool but also as a tool to help maintain my weight (which is what they recommend). I haven’t lost an exorbitant amount of weight, but I feel like I’m making the steps towards a skinnier life. A permanently skinnier life, and that feels pretty darn amazing for a fatty like me.
