Inna Gadda Da Vida

I’ve mentioned before the terrapins and eels in the lobby of my work. Well, what I’ve referred to as “the courtyard” is the Tawes Garden. This is a 5-acre plot pretty much in downtown Annapolis that recreates the varied terrains of Maryland. Western Maryland has tall trees and all sorts of forest-y ground-growth. Southern Maryland is sandy and marshy. I guess it’s a sort of tourist-y destination, but honestly, it seems kind of lame for that. Their programs are mostly aimed at younger kids, which makes sense (shorter visit = less temper tantrums), but it makes for a great work-day walk (if you don’t mind lots and lots of circles).

I went outside today for a half hour walk, partly because I didn’t know what was out there, mostly because I needed to get some exercise in for the day and getting away from my desk is nice. I broke a bit of a sweat, so I guess the walk counts as exercise (will probably be lifting tonight).

It’s a pretty nice walk, very shady, even though most of the trees don’t have leaves yet. I saw lots of birds – Mallard Ducks, Northern Cardinals, Goldfinches, and some very pretty small brown birds who would not let me take their picture so I could identify them later (one or two may have turned out, we’ll have to see). I also saw some neat plants – the ferns are growing their fuzzy fiddle heads, tiny wild violas, periwinkle, and also some plants I could not identify. I took pictures, which I may post later.

I also took a picture of a sleeping terrapin this morning who had what I call “air boogers” on his nostrils. I think those pictures came out, unlike the pictures I took earlier this week, so you can look forward to that, too.

After titling this entry, I have a very long organ solo in my head. If you’ve never heard the 17-some minute version of this song, look it up. It’s really not as painful as you might think.

    aw! yay for terrapins!

I can’t read the title or hear the song without thinking of Dad’s story about it.
