States I’ve Visited

WoDM reminded me yesterday of these visited state sites, where they’ll color in a map of the US based on where you’ve been. It’s possible I stepped into Rhode Island on my trip to Boston, but I don’t remember, so we’re holding steady at 28.

My rules for the states I’ve been in is that I can’t have flown over them. Other than that, when I drive in the car, I stop frequently enough to guarantee I step in every state I drive through.

I talked to an Uncle a few months back about how interesting this country is in terms of differences in climate, in landscape, in culture. There aren’t a whole lot of countries where driving cross country is as interesting as it is here. I treat driving trips as a sort of rite of passage towards adult-hood. The freedom to get in a car and drive with a friend or two around the country may not be economically or environmentally friendly anymore, but it’s still important. It’s about changing the way you view you world – and you don’t have to buy plane tickets, or plan out a path or get a passport – all you need is a license, a car, and some money. You could camp out, you could stay in hotels, you could meet up with family or friends and stay with them.

Anyway, looks like I still have a roadtrip or two left to complete the lower 48 states, at least…

K.
