Soapmaking

So I decided to try my hand at making soap yesterday. It’s something I’ve wanted to try for a long time but have just never gotten around to. I’ve made liquid laundry detergent from bar soap (Fels-Naptha), sodium carbonate, and borax, which we’ve been using to wash our clothes for the past few months. That [...]

Disappointment

Readers, I’m disappointed no one commented on the corn pwned animated gif. It still makes me laugh. Inari was “fixed” yesterday. She has a tiny incision, she’s not licking it obsessively and she’s been both cuddly and playful today, so I think she’s returning to normal. The proof: Since WoDM and I had a day [...]

Sleepwalkers

We watched Sleepwalkers last night. It’s a terrible, terrible movie. It does have Mädchen Amick in it, but we were both fairly disappointed that she stayed dressed for the whole film. On the plus side, however, it did lead me to create what I’m sure will be the next big internet meme:

Origami

I promise, I’ll update this entry when I get home with photos of WoDM’s handcrafted stocking and my origami pterodactyl ornament. That’s right, it’s not a crane. I’m not good at origami. I think of origami the way I think of calligraphy. A fold in origami is the same as a stroke of the pen [...]

S-M-A-T, I mean…

I’ve been bored at work and taking a few IQ tests. This is a matter of morbid curiosity – I stand to gain nothing except for brain exercise from taking the tests (not to belittle the brain exercise). But it does more than that, I’m forcing myself to wonder why I never considered myself a [...]

Holidays and the Xmas Tree Conundrum Resolved

I had off for veteran’s day yesterday. Kurt Vonnegut has a line somewhere in Slaughterhouse Five about how Veteran’s Day is an empty holiday, but Armistice Day meant something. I’m inclined to agree, and I’ve never had an Armistice Day in my life. There is something untoward about stripping holidays of their direct meanings, it [...]

The XMas Tree Conundrum

I am, and have always been, a big believer in the cut-your-own xmas trees. The experience of stepping through a dusting of snow, with a cold saw in your gloved hands, scoping for a tree that fits your personal style and then the teamwork involved in taking that sucker down. But it wouldn’t make any [...]

She’s crafty

WoDM’s sister L passed along a link to him, saying that I might like it. While I love the cute little plush objects and the prints and cards and embroidered things, I found myself really digging the blog, for a variety of reasons. 1. She talks a lot about the food she makes. I gathered [...]

“Shangri-La” Update: Day 55

The story so far: “Shangri-La” is in quotes because I haven’t been following the Shangri-La Diet for a while (see my previous post on the subject). Basically, I stopped taking the oil prescribed by the SLD for a few days out of general laziness, and found that the appetite suppression I had experienced with the [...]

Wal-Mart

I’ve always resisted Wal-Mart on two grounds – one is the moral ground, more with concern to how workers are treated then to sweatshop labor (there are very few places where you can obtain non-sweatshop labor materials). In terms of how workers are treated, I’ve come to the conclusion that all retail department-y stores suck. [...]
