WoDM signed us up for a free two-week trial of gamefly. The first game we received was Trauma Center 2 for the wii, I haven’t played this game yet. Yesterday, we got My Word Coach.
We sat down to play, because it beats watching tv. I have a lot of issues with this game.
- They over-explain everything. And not in a fun, interesting way like, Smooth Moves. Rather, they have drawn teachers talk to you in what is often a condescending manner. And not a funny condescending manner, like Smooth Moves.
- They over-explain everything because they took what could have been a very simple system of tasks and scoring and made it overly complicated.
- The game controls are awful. Someone brilliant decided that since you can rotate the wiimote, it makes more sense to have you do that then to point and click with it. It makes game play a lot harder, and tasks like entering your name are needlessly time-consuming.
- When you begin, you are given two tasks or games you can play. These games are uninteresting (inserting a missing letter to complete a word, picking a definition for a word). Although the words weren’t simple, there were a lot of slang type terms and proper nouns. Words that I don’t find it particularly useful to know (cockade? dribs?)
- The multiplayer games are stupid and lack a competitive component. I want to whoop my friend’s butt or lose miserably, but I don’t want us both to win. That’s silly.
- The time limits are ridiculous the further you get into the game. They’re also ridiculous because the game controls they use are incredibly irritating.
- If you do well, better than average, they still tell you that you’re stupid.
We’re returning this game. Blech. But I’m a bit excited to play Trauma Center, even though I don’t know what the story-line is or what the game-play entails.

There aren’t a whole lot of reviews out yet for My Word Coach, probably because it only came out a couple of weeks ago and it’s not exactly a high-profile title. But boy, does it feel like a low-budget hack.
I did find out that it’s been released for both the Wii and the DS, and the DS version has been received more favorably. Additionally, you can apparently use the DS-Wii wireless connection and use the DS as a controller for the Wii game. That might make the controls a little more tolerable, but it’d still be a lousy game.
so can you use a keyboard with the wii / my word coach?
I think I got kevin trauma center for the ds … and my friends LOVE trauma center (I would like it too but don’t have a wii or ds). Supposedly it can be a little frustrating to get the controls down and there are some patients that are more difficult than others, but I hope it’s fun.
[also I seem to recall the first one was a bit sexist.]
