Origami

I promise, I’ll update this entry when I get home with photos of WoDM’s handcrafted stocking and my origami pterodactyl ornament. That’s right, it’s not a crane.

I’m not good at origami. I think of origami the way I think of calligraphy. A fold in origami is the same as a stroke of the pen in calligraphy. It must be done perfectly or your letter, and then your word will become super wonky. I eventually did well with calligraphy, but it took me probably ten minutes just to set everything up, after which I probably averaged 2-4 letters a minute.

I am not, by nature, a precise person. I am a frenetic person. The only time I am peaceful and unclumsy is when I sleep. I can make an origami fold nearly perfect. But that nearly perfect fold quickly degenerates a few folds in, leaving me with cranes with uneven wings, or cranes that just aren’t cranes at all.

I’m a picky person about crafting. I get frustrated when things don’t go the way I expect them to. I’ll return to the origami tonight, but I’ll try to approach it differently. I have all the time and paper in the world to practice my origami.

Pictures, as promised:

michael’s stocking

This is WoDM’s stocking. All I did was sew on the buttons and some silver bells and then crappify it with fabric paint. Inari stepped on the paint at the top, thus explaining some of the messiness. She had to have a bath after that incident, which she did not enjoy.

good peace crane

This is a good crane, made with yuzen chiyogami, an origami paper that feels more like fabric than paper.

pterodactyl

ZOMG blurry pterodactyl attack!
