SLD Day 6: Something is Happening

Published by Michael at 3:44 pm under Health

I said I’d admit that something was happening with the Shangri-La Diet when my scale read less than 200 pounds. Well, this morning I weighed in at 199.5.

So, something is happening.

My scale, incidentally, is a nice and accurate body-fat scale made by Tanita, whom I can highly recommend. I can weigh myself repeatedly and get the same figure over and over again, which I consider a plus. My body fat has been pretty close to 31% over the past six days, while my weight has dropped from 203.5 to 199.5. I’m sure much of that is water weight–four pounds in six days is a bit much–but that doesn’t change the fact that I haven’t seen this kind of response from my body to any calorie-restriction attempt I’ve made before. In other words, I suspect that the SLD is having a physiological effect on me beyond the obvious effect on my appetite.

Just for posterity’s sake, here are the specifics of my current SLD approach. I’m taking a tablespoon of “light tasting” olive oil, floated on 2-3 tablespoons of cold water, at around 10:00am and again at around 4:00pm. It’s only been a few days but I can say that a cup of black coffee at 8:00am leaves me significantly less hungry come lunchtime. Is this because it’s flavor without calories, thus aiding the disassociation of the two?

Also, Seth Roberts linked to me (and called me a Bayesian, no less)! And to think I sent Robert Atkins all that fan mail and never got a response!

Just kidding. I’m pretty close to vegan, so my Atkins Diet would include–well, a whole lot of nothing, really.
