The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

“Awesome Senior Moment

Here’s a quote from a government employee who witnessed a recent interaction between an elderly woman and an antiwar protester in a Metro station in DC

There were protesters on the train platform handing out pamphlets on the evils of America. I politely declined to take one.  An elderly woman was behind me getting off the escalator and a young (20-ish) female protester offered her a pamphlet, which she politely declined.

The young protester put her hand on the old woman’s shoulder as a gesture of friendship and in a very soft voice said, “Lady, don’t you care about the children of Iraq?”

The old woman looked up at her and said, “Honey, my father died in France during World War II, I lost my husband in Korea, and a son in Vietnam. All three died so you could have the right to stand here and bad mouth our country. If you touch me again, I’ll stick this umbrella up your ass and open it.”

I can’t think of any family I know that hasn’t had some relative go off to war and fight, presumably to fight for our liberties.  That’s the guise our government puts it under, and bless the folks who actually do end up going – for whatever reason they choose. The protestors in this country are protecting your rights and liberties, too.  The independent newspapers, the multitude of websites, the people who say what they want and use the forums they legally have to say it – bless them for taking advantage of those liberties.  By utilizing those freedoms, they’re protecting them for all of us.  They won’t get benefits, they won’t get paid and they won’t get a parade but some of them will risk their lives and livelihood to speak out for all of us.

That means something, too.

And the next time someone says their loved one has died for us to have the right to protest and we should thank god we live in America where someone will choose to die to grant us these rights, effectively trying to guilt someone else out of protesting – maybe they need an umbrella stuck up their ass and opened (Where did little old ladies get these mouths? I blame video games).  The government recruits people to fight its stupid war (every single high school student, to be exact), why shouldn’t anyone else be allowed to go out there and try to recruit people to their side?

Furthermore, the next thing I read that insinuates that protestors in this country are in the minority in terms of how they feel, I will stick an umbrella up that person’s ass and open it.

I agree with you in principle, but I find proselytizers of all kinds annoying. That protester crossed the line when she spoke to that lady after having been politely brushed off (touched her, no less!). I probably would have offered her an umbrella as well, even if I did care about the children of Iraq.

All else aside, I have my doubts about whether this exchange ever even happened, and so does Snopes.

Oh, I have no problem with the old lady’s umbrella threat, but I do have a problem with the other things she said. I also have a problem with the way the protestor approached her, but maybe she learned that hassling people isn’t really the way to get people over to your side. or maybe not. people are stupider than I give them credit for.
