Imagine – people don’t value having children in a society that doesn’t afford most people the opportunity to have them in a reasonable fashion.
Let’s see, little time off from work after one has children, the expense of childcare since most families are forced to have two adults in the workforce, the lack of universal healthcare – which leads to one of the highest infant mortality rates in the western world (among other things). And the president is voting against insurance for children (Bush – No Deal on Children’s Health Plan). Not to even touch the topic of education.
It reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw in Rockville once, on my way to school. “Don’t breed ‘em if you can’t feed ‘em.” How ironic, really. We refuse to help people who choose to have children in any way, shape or form. But we don’t offer them any education on how to prevent having children. The same ideology that refuses to discuss sex, refuses to deal with the consequences of the act once it happens. And it does happen, because we’re programmed that way.
These are the values we have now. We say we value family, but when someone creates a family, both parents end up working their hands to the bone to pay for it. We say we value family but we don’t provide healthcare to children or even to parents so they can continue to take care of their children. We say we value family but we don’t give people the education they need about contraceptives to delay having a family until they are willing and able and eager to have and raise children – which, if you haven’t guessed, results in happier, healthier families.
God Bless America. No wait, I have that one wrong.
Save us, Jeebus!
